Two thousand and fifteen has been a hard year for Directioners. First with Zayn Malik leaving the boys he once claimed as family; he also left his now ex-fiancée, Perrie Edwards. Now we, the fandom, also have Niall, Liam, Harry, and Louis going on break. We have Louis Tomlinson baby rumors and we have Liam Payne confessing that his life has been filled with alcohol… and lots of it. With the breakdown off stage that caused a show cancellation… who knows if they’ll come back for another whirlwind rollercoaster.

When One Direction lost one of their beloved members, Zayn Malik, in March of this year, the fans began to speculate that Modest Management forced Zayn out of the picture. In an interview with Louis Tomlinson, Hollywood Life quoted that ‘Louis Tomlinson was hit the hardest.’ Another article said that Louis claimed, ‘Zayn left because he fell out of love with music.’ Malik also left the Little Mix singer he once called his fiancée, Perrie Edwards. Zayn said that he was having issues, and he couldn’t take the heat anymore. He claimed that he just needed a break.

Not only did Zayn Malik and Perrie Edwards break up, Louis Tomlinson and Eleanor Calder and even Liam Payne and Sophia Smith called it quits. Elounor had been together for 4 years. Sophiam had been together for 2, almost 3 years. The fandom had a close call with Harry Styles getting together with Nadine Leopold, a Victoria’s Secret model, and Niall Horan with Melissa Whitelaw, who is an Australian journalism student, blogger and musician. This fandom has gone through quite a bit. Except… this isn’t the end.

This year, our Sass Master from Doncaster confirmed… he is going to be a father. This is just something the fandom is having a hard time wrapping their heads around. One fan said ‘IM GOING TO HAVE A PANICK ATTACK IS LOUIS ACTUALLY GOING TO BE A DAD IM GOING TO BE SICK’. Another said ‘the longer you and your team let this rumor fester, the more support I /lose/ for you. im sick & tired of this s***. im done’. On the other hand, some fans have had a good laugh about this. Fans are asking ‘Is the baby a TomlinSON or a TomlinDAUGHTER?’ There have been fake text messages from the fandom to Jesus and God saying ‘WE NEED YOUR HELP!’ There are numerous people who were hoping and praying that Eleanor Calder was going to be the mother.

One Direction Going in Different Directions

As we all know, the 30th of October was the last time they did a concert. They have officially decided that they won’t be coming back from this hiatus for up to two years.

Recently… as of yesterday, One Direction came out with their latest album, Made in the A.M. With reviews of people freaking out and screaming and crying, they seem to have done a great job. Do you think the fandom will stay strong throughout the long break?

The break that never ended

This piece guessed the break might last up to two years. It lasted much longer. Made in the A.M. came out on November 13, 2015, the date on this article. The On the Road Again Tour had wrapped on October 31, 2015, after 80 shows, and the band’s last televised performance was on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve on December 31, 2015. The indefinite hiatus began in January 2016.

All four remaining members had released solo singles by May 2017, and each has since put out at least one solo album. The band never reunited. Liam Payne died on October 16, 2024, after a fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In a 2025 interview, Louis Tomlinson said he could not imagine a reunion.
