English Fanatics: The Writer’s Room

Read some tips on improving your writing by working in a great location

May 8, 2015 School year 2014/15

Learn how to create and customize a great room for getting your head into English mode. The perfect area for writing is different for everyone, but there are a few key elements needed to complete a paper.

Color can affect the mind in different ways and help you to think in a new way as well. Colors like blue, purple, green, and orange will put the mind in a calm state. Anything but plain white is better. Because who really wants to stare at a blank white wall anyway?

Another way you can add color to your work space without spending too much on paint, is by getting a few colored poster boards. You can place these around the back of your desk or against the wall. So make sure the area you’re in or creating has a color scheme that pleases your eye.

Now, for the second part of setting up your writing center, you should consider the average noise level in your area. Sit there for a few seconds and see how much noise travels through there. A quiet space will help to concentrate and stay focused.

Comfort and feeling relaxed are high advantage points to being able to think. The hard chairs at school aren’t the best but a big chair that’s just too comfy will take away from concentration.

Pick a nice office chair with cushions but steer away from that tempting chair that makes you sink into the floor. Other supplements to office chairs are butterfly chairs or a standard kitchen seat with some padding. Pick something sturdy you can sit up straight in.

Lighting can be adjusted with a few lamps or lights. Working under fluorescent, glaring lights can give you a headache especially if you’re already typing on a screen. So to reduce the stress, use desk lamps, string lights, or natural light from windows to satisfy your vision.

Motivate yourself with a few inviting items or humorous posters. Maybe you write better when you have a jar of candy to munch on, such as Jolly Ranchers, or an inspirational quote. Tape some funny (and ironically true) pictures of being an English nerd. Sometimes those vending machine toys can be a good incentive. Make your area a happy place to work.

Incentives aren’t always objects, they can even be scents. Have you ever tried working in a lab but someone burnt coffee down the hall and you couldn’t think about anything else because of it? Well if there are specific smells that you love, add them to your room. Whether it’s the scent of movie theater popcorn, fresh Cappuccinos, or clean laundry; you can most likely find a candle or spray for your favorite scent.

So there’s only a few final touches that will complete your writing nook. The common things like pencils, pens, paper, and possibly a computer for those fortunate ones who own their own. If you are a complete die-hard English fanatic, who believes in only typed papers done with a typewriter, then good for you for having a whole lot of patience and dedication.

There isn’t much that someone else can tell you to do for creating a great work space, so think of your own ideas or expand upon these tips. Find what suits you the best. So, grab a pen and paper and start writing.
