Social Media

How Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube and a stream of new apps were shaping teen life in the fall of 2015.

October 5, 2015 School year 2015/16

“I use Facebook every day after I wake up or before I go to bed,” said Celia Spragg. In the past few years technology has improved to touch phones where you’re able to download any application (app) like Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, etc. Teens spend more time than ever on their phones: being on Snapchat sending funny pictures to their best friend or just texting someone. Social media has become more mobile and accessible to everyone around the world.

“I like Snapchat because I can send funny pictures to my friend and no one else can see it but them,” said Ravin Harris.

More and more businesses are creating their own apps for their clients to download and use whenever they need it. When you go on Facebook, in your news feed you will see that your cousin is getting married, and when and where. Social media has really made an impact on our society, whether it’s with new updates on Snapchat or being able to hurt someone’s feelings with one click of a button.

“YouTube is my favorite because I get to watch whoever whenever I want,” said Ravin Harris.

There are websites that follow locations and can tell if there’s someone nearby who also likes fish tacos and you both have a lot in common. When someone adds you as one of their friends on Snapchat, or other apps, it will send a notification. You’re able to download an app that downloads any book that you want. Or an app that tells you where the nearest Taco Bell is.

Social media has grown more and more over the past years and it’s going to continue to grow. By checking any social media you will see some of the new challenges that everyone is doing, like the ice bucket challenge, the ice and salt challenge, or the cinnamon challenge.

Social media keeps you on top of what’s going on with the celebrities, what the new top hits are, or what’s going on with Kylie Jenner. Social media has really made an impact in our lives, whether it was good or bad, and it’s still going to make an impact in our lives over the years.

What researchers found

The online challenges mentioned here caught researchers' attention too. A 2016 paper (arXiv:1602.00248) treated nomination games such as the ice bucket challenge like infections and fitted a disease model to UK outbreaks from 2014 and 2015. Median estimates of the basic reproduction number ranged from 1.9 to 2.5, meaning each new player passed the game on to about two others, with one to two days between rounds. A study of the ice bucket challenge on Twitter, first posted in 2015 (arXiv:1508.04417), found that talking about the challenge and actually doing it spread in different ways.
