What Is This After School App? Anonymous

An anonymous posting app called After School spread through DaVinci in early 2016. Here is how it worked and why some users were suspicious.

Recently there has been an outbreak of students downloading a new app called After School. The After School app is for students who just want to simply post something anonymously but have other people see the post.

It came out in November 2015 by a company known as Ambient Corporation and is a sensation. The After School app is available for free download on Android and iOS.

To get into the app you may have to verify by Facebook and then you will be granted access. Then simply type DaVinci in the search bar and you will be able to select our school and you have access to anything someone posts.

Some people do not like the fact that the app will make everything anonymous. “It’s a good app but it sucks that everything has to be anonymous,” said Emma Tracy.

The app doesn’t allow bullying and also allows you to like and comment on someone’s post just like Facebook or Instagram. “It’s cool to see what people think about each other,” says Addison Budge.

Although the app seems to be like other social media, so far the only downside is the content, which causes the app to be recommended to only people 17 and above. The app has over 200 users who go here to DaVinci, and while the app restricts bullying it does have content some users would dislike.

Many people have started to get suspicious about this app because the names in the posts are usually first name and last initial, which would make sense to say that that’s why you had to verify with Facebook.

Also the posts seem very automated, with perfect grammar and no emojis, which caught the eye of some users.

Most posts only have a first name, which causes confusion and anger for some users. You are allowed to comment but it’s likely you will not be getting a reply back.

Where After School went

After School was made by a company called ONE, Inc., founded by Michael Callahan and Cory Levy. The app first appeared in mid-November 2014 and came back in April 2015 with filters for mature content, age verification, round-the-clock anonymous support and a system for responding to threats. In February 2016, a few weeks after this article ran, the company announced a $16.4 million Series A funding round.

The buzz did not last. The last iOS version, 1.99.94, came out on February 18, 2019. By 2020 the app was no longer in the Apple App Store or Google Play and its website was offline. In 2021 the company's staff were reported to have joined Ancestry.com in Utah, though that detail rests on a single source. The anonymous school feed that had more than 200 DaVinci users in January 2016 is now gone.
