The First Art Show of the Year
First portraits, early deadlines and the winners of DaVinci’s fall 2015 art show.
Mrs. Rosdahl had a lot of students that were doing their first portraits. She has done a lesson that is a portrait, but she has her students draw only half the face, and the other half is the actual picture that they are drawing. She wanted it to be more challenging for her students, so she had them draw full portraits. A lot of the students that participated in the art show entered their first portraits.
“I am so impressed with the caliber of work that came out in such little time,” Mrs. Rosdahl exclaims, explaining that the students didn’t have as much time as they would have had, because Mr. Conlon and Mrs. Rosdahl had to hold the art show earlier than they would have liked.
There were two judges, one being our lovely Mrs. Roberts, who judged most of the ceramics pieces. Then there was Kaylah, a student at Weber State, who also volunteers in Mrs. Rosdahl’s classes.
The art show wasn’t just for Mrs. Rosdahl’s students; Mr. Conlon’s students were also a part of the art show. The art was heard to be absolutely amazing. Some of the people that attended the art show were bewildered that some of the pieces were first portraits.
“I was nervous because the show was quite a bit earlier this year … I was nervous but I think the students did awesome,” Mr. Conlon said. The students talked about the art show on the first day and how the art show is worth ten percent of their grade.
Mr. Conlon had the students turn in their pieces for the art show the day before the art show, so he wouldn’t have to rush to get the last pieces in the show at the last minute. He still had students with pieces that weren’t completely done by the time they were due, so he took points off for that. “Deadlines! It’s a big part of art,” Mr. Conlon says while talking about the students who lost credit for not getting their work done the day before the art show.
“Timeliness is a factor,” Mr. Conlon says, explaining that if you have clients and they ask for something, it has to be done right when they need it. That’s a lesson they will have to learn if they want to move forward with an art career, because it is a big part of the art world.
There was a lot of amazing art at the art show. The first place winner for painting is Amelia Wolf’s piece All the Shades of Me. First place winner for high school is Monica Tijerina’s piece Pastel Prince. First place for middle school is Annalyn Hatch’s piece Sunshine.
Some of the honorable mentions were Loita Rockwell’s piece Campbell’s Soup Tile, Gavin Lepore’s piece Shatter, Mckay Colleni’s piece Portrait Set, Reece McKay, Bayleigh Elliot, Nerieyda Biancas’s piece April Fools, Aunika Woodbury, Trista Bettfreund’s piece Bird in the Rose Bush, Grace Dachod’s piece Vase, and Annabelle Zimmer’s piece The Silver Lining.
