Honor Roll Field Trip

First-quarter honor roll students walk to the theater to see Disney's Big Hero 6, laughter, tears and a life-sized Baymax included.

November 17, 2014 School year 2014/15

On Friday, students who made the first quarter honor roll (requiring a GPA of 3.5 or higher for 7th-12th graders) were invited to see the new movie Big Hero 6. They were accompanied by Mr. Post, Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Brown and Ms. Harger.

At 8:30, they were all excused from 5th period to meet in the South Foyer. Once there, Mr. Post read off a list of names of students that could wait outside. Once everyone was there, the long and cold walk began. Good thing they were open before we got there!

Some students went to get snacks while others immediately went into Theater 12. The overhead sign showed a starting time of 9:00 AM. It actually started at around 9:30, after some introductory clips were shown, including a short film, by Disney, about a dog that ate (almost) everything.

All the students seemed happy with the movie, especially since Disney made it. Throughout, there were several moments of laughter and joy. In fact, at the end, some students claimed to have cried (SPOILER ALERT: Someone dies in the beginning).

Right before heading out, all the students took a huge panorama group photo by an almost life-sized Baymax (the big white robot).

Two Oscars from one morning at the movies

The honor roll crowd saw two future Academy Award winners that Friday. Big Hero 6 opened in the United States and Canada on November 7, 2014, and went on to earn an estimated $672 million worldwide. At the 87th Academy Awards on February 22, 2015, it won Best Animated Feature.

The short about the dog that ate almost everything was Feast, written and directed by Patrick Osborne. It follows a Boston Terrier named Winston through the meals he shares with his owner, James. Feast took the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film at the same ceremony.

Baymax did not stay on the big screen. Disney brought the team back in Big Hero 6: The Series, which premiered on Disney Channel and Disney XD in 2017, and the robot later got his own Disney+ show, Baymax, which premiered on June 29, 2022.
