Jorge A. Cotes Jr: It’s about giving hope

Listening to veterans speak, a student finds their stories are about more than loss.

By Jorge A. Cotes Jr. November 12, 2015 School year 2015/16

We sit here listening to men and women who have served their country with pride and honor about the things they’ve lost, the pain they’ve had to endure, and the people they have met.

So many stories of sorrow and distress, but not everything was pain; not everything is about death and hopelessness.

On the contrary, it’s about giving hope and providing opportunities to those who don’t have what we have. It’s all about helping one another to become the best that we can be. They talked about giving to people, and that the destruction and violence we see on TV is a small part of war.

If we really want to thank our veterans on this important day, we need to be kind to each other and come together to create a better place for everyone.

For all those veterans out there serving, or those done serving, thank you for all you have done, and for giving us a place that we can be proud to call home.
