Alessia Cara Review
A student reviewer on discovering 19-year-old Canadian singer Alessia Cara through her breakout single “Here.”

Today new artists are popping up left and right in our society. It’s common to see what was once a local band now become a popular trending group. I love watching bands or artists get really popular and watching them grow. It’s also fun just discovering new artists as they’re getting popular. One of the new artists I enjoy is 19-year-old Alessia Cara from Ontario, Canada.
What sparked her interest in music was when she began writing poetry and did theater. Not too long after that she began playing guitar and deepening her talent in music. She began her career by singing covers of songs on YouTube when she was 13. I feel like I can really relate to her because what got me into music and performing was musical theater and writing songs when I was younger.
Alessia Cara has been extremely popular since her big hit single, “Here,” came out. Since her big single came out she has had more songs come out. She has been producing music since 2009, but this year she has gotten very popular. I had not heard of Alessia Cara until I heard her song “Here.”
This song just captured me and really brought me to love it. Since I heard her song, I have listened to her other songs on the radio. When I heard her song I felt like I was able to connect with the song and really fall into a story almost. I like to listen to the song often because I love singing with Alessia Cara; she has such a unique voice and it almost sounds like a mix of Lorde and Ryn Weaver. I love the way it sounds too; it’s almost like an R&B and hip hop sort of sound.
I really hope she keeps coming out with new music and keeps getting popular because she has an amazing voice. What I also like is that her lyrics have a message or a story. Other students have expressed that they like Alessia Cara’s song “Here.” Kiara Rojas and Ayla Wind both said, “I love this song!” Hopefully people’s love for her music grows and she can get recognized for her amazing talent.
Where Alessia Cara went next
The reviewer got her wish. “Here” kept climbing after this piece ran and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Cara’s debut album, Know-It-All, came out on November 13, 2015, about a month after this review. The timing is worth noticing: when this piece ran in October 2015, “Here” was still building as a sleeper hit and the album that carried it was not out yet, so the review caught her right at the turning point.
In January 2018 she won Best New Artist at the 60th Grammy Awards. She followed up with The Pains of Growing in November 2018, In the Meantime in September 2021 and Love & Hyperbole in February 2025, so the singer this student spotted early kept releasing music for the next decade.
