School Involvement

A student argues that caring about DaVinci, its teachers and its clubs is the first step toward bringing school involvement back.

What does school involvement mean to me? School involvement is much like school spirit, but so much easier to do for those of us who are lazy, and doesn’t take a lot of work.

The whole idea of school involvement here at DaVinci has diminished before our eyes and I don’t know what anyone can do about it. I am just one person, and maybe I can’t change anything, but if more noticed what was going on around this school, many could band together and attempt a change. Maybe it’s the new batch of kids coming in every year with less and less respect for authority. Maybe it’s that each year the memory of this school, and what little it was built on, has faded, and no one is around to remind the budding freshman where they are and why it’s important.

DaVinci Academy was an experiment, built from the ground up. From the moment it stood tall, students and teachers worked together to make it the best place possible. They respected one another and they respected the school. What does that sound like? Family, yes, but also school involvement. Now after ten or so years, the school involvement here has crashed and burned. Students no longer seem to care about student elections, or the newspaper, or even the literary magazine.

DaVinci has lost its edge; that edge being the student involvement within the school. We can all take little steps to begin the transformation of getting DaVinci back to its prime glory. How? Let’s all start by simply caring. It isn’t hard. Care about your peers and fellow students. Care about the vast structure of the school and don’t deface it. Care about the teachers and respect that they know what they are doing.

Get involved. Participate in clubs and student government, or even submit to Lit Mag. If that’s not your thing, at least acknowledge it. These things do exist. They are what make up DaVinci. I personally regret not being more involved in school activities, and there is nothing I can do about it because it’s too late. Maybe it’s not too late for you. It all begins with you. You don’t have to sprint down the hall screaming about your love for DaVinci, though few wouldn’t actually mind that. Just simply care about the school and respect it. Care about the history of the school, teachers, and your peers. That is what being involved as a student is. Learn it and live it.
