Why High School Relationships Suck
The End of the Stirrings
It’s everywhere. From the school steps on the North entrance to the cafeteria, from the library to the classrooms, high school sweethearts are everywhere. And it’s freaking ludicrous. I mean… The time to look for potential mates is not when you’re figuring out where you want to go to college to figure out what you’re going to do with your life. In fact, the time to look for potential mates is nonexistent. You don’t look. In fact, love stabs you in the a** with Cupid’s arrow and it injects this irresistible urge to pursue it.
So why do so many go for it? Is it the hormones? Probably. But speaking from experience and observation, it could also be because of the drive to be normal. Pop culture is seething with teenage romance and irrationality. Teens want to find the perfect Zac, Edward, Danny, Gabriella, Bella, or Sandy. But really, all they end up finding is another Sharpay or Jacob, the wrong one.
Shouldn’t we, as teenagers, accept the fact that we’re too young for romance? What’s so wrong with leading the single life? The single life entails a life of independence and fun. You’re free to eye as many cuties as you’d like. You’re allowed to pursue your own hobbies and interests without your significant other thinking you’re weird. More time for friends, studying, and family. The things that matter. It sounds like the idyllic life, right?
So where’s the appeal? Where’s the fun in the dating scene? Dating means compromises, heartbreak, cheating, fighting… Sharing a unique, intimate bond with someone. Ew. Cooties? Double yuck. Where’s the appeal? What’s so fun about cooties and the lack of privacy? Nothing.
Teenagers don’t need romance. They need friends.
